Maria Amparo Ruiz de Burton

Sinopsis del Libro

Libro Maria Amparo Ruiz de Burton

Since the recent republication of her novel The Squatter and the Don, Mara Amparo Ruiz de Burton (1832?95) has become a key figure in the recovery of nineteenth-century Mexican American literature. An aristocratic Californiana, she championed the rights of Mexican Americans in novels, plays, and letters. Her 1885 novel called attention to the illegal appropriation of Mexican land by the United States government, and she critiqued the political mores of America after the Civil War in light of the Mexican-American war. Her keen assessment of corporate capitalism at the end of the nineteenth century, frank acknowledgment of feminine desire, and deft insights about economic realities and class relations were unique among her American peers. Using Ruiz de Burton?s work to analyze the critical schism conventionally imposed on nineteenth-century literary culture in America, the essays in this collection also draw connections between her work and the contemporary Chicana and Chicano canons. At once richly historical and critically nuanced, these essays appraise a politically complex Mexican American writer alternately celebrated as marginalized and censured for her identification with a social elite. This volume includes a section on pedagogy that offers a discussion of teaching approaches, syllabi, discussion questions, and assignments.

Libro How Far is America from Here?

How Far is America From Here? approaches American nations and cultures from a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective. It is very much at the heart of this comparative agenda that “America” be considered as a hemispheric and global matter. It discusses American identities relationally, whether the relations under discussion operate within the borders of the United States, throughout the Americas, and/or worldwide. The various articles here gathered interrogate the very notion of “America”: which, whose America, when, why now, how? What is meant by “far”—distance,...

Hacia la Novela Nueva

Libro Hacia la Novela Nueva

This volume of essays in Spanish and English examines some of the key issues which surround the emergence of the Avant-Garde novel in Spain at the beginning of the twentieth century. The experimental novel of the 1920s is seen as the culmination of a process of change in approaches to the novel which began early in the century and was further promoted by Spain's key Avant-Gardist Ramón Gómez de la Serna. Several essays focus on the form of the novel and seek to shed new light on the role of José Ortega y Gasset as mentor to the new writers of the 1920s and on our understanding of his use...
