William B. Seabrook nació en la localidad estadounidense de Westminster, Maryland, en 1886. Su abuelo paterno era el editor del diario local y su padre ministro de una iglesia luterana, lo que movió al joven Seabrook a interesarse por el periodismo y las religiones. A los veinte años viajó a Europa y, ya de regreso, inicia su carrera periodística en el «Atlanta Journal». En 1915 vuelve a Francia como camillero voluntario en la Gran Guerra. Herido y repatriado, es contratado por el «New York Times» donde publica una serie de crónicas sensacionalistas sobre crímenes, ocultismo, etc....
