Desmond Seward nació en París y se formó en Gran Bretaña. Desde que en 1972 apareciera la primera versión de Los monjes de la guerra, ha entrado en la Orden de Malta, lo que le ha dado la oportunidad de profundizar en los temas que siempre le han interesado. Entre su extensa bibliografía destacan The Bourbon Kings of France (1970), Eleanor of Aquitaine (1978), Napoleon and Hitler (1990) y Caravaggio: a passionate life (1998). Con posterioridad ha estado trabajando en el estudio de la llamada Guerra de las Rosas.
