Excerpt from El Niño de la Bola The next twelve years find Alarcón actively engaged in politics. Owing, however, to the instability of his political beliefs, he achieved no position of importance. He was a deputy to the Cortes in 1865, 1869, 1870 and 1871, and in 1876 he was elected Senator. In 1875 he entered the Council of State and was decorated in the same year with the Gran Cruz of the Order of Isabella the Catholic. In 1874 he resumed his literary labors and in 1876 he was elected to the Royal Spanish Academy. In 1874 appeared La Alpujarra and El Sombrero de tres picos, followed by El Escándalo El Niño de la bola El Capitán Veneno and La Pródiga Inicios literarios and Viajes por España La Historia de mis libros 1884) and Últimos Escritos Alarcón died in Madrid after a long illness, on the lgth of July, 1891.
